Purleigh has had the benefit of a village shop for many years. However, in the Autumn of 2018 the existing shop closed down leaving the village with no local shop. At a public meeting arranged by the Parish Council in November 2018, there was widespread support for the proposal that the only realistic way to provide a local shop would be to create and operate one as a Community Shop. Following this endorsement, an enthusiastic group of villagers volunteered to form a steering group, have investigated and confirmed the viability of this proposal, and have gone on to form Purleigh Community Shop Limited.
Who are we?
Purleigh Community Shop Limited (“PCSL”) is a community benefit society registered with the Financial Conduct Authority under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014, with registration number 8064. We have received invaluable support from the Plunkett Foundation, which has helped establish over 300 community shops, as well as other community businesses, around the UK, and we have used their Model Rules as the basis for PCSL’s Rules. We are a not-for-profit society, managed by the community for the benefit of the community as a whole. Enshrined in our rules is the principle that trading surpluses, beyond those required for the needs of the business, will be distributed to local community projects as decided by the membership.
We want to offer what the community wants, so are always open to ideas and suggestions of how we can improve what we are providing to our customers. moment to drop us a line.
Purleigh Community Shop Ltd is Registered as Community Benefit Society with the Financial Conduct Authority Company Number RS008064
The Essex Lottery was created in 2017 by Essex County Council. Set up to support community projects in the local area, the The Essex Lottery operates on the principle of raising money within the community for the community and empowers local good causes, like Purleigh Community Shop, to raise money in a fun and effective way.
In a time of shrinking budgets and increased community need, The Essex Lottery enables people to support the causes they care most about, helping good causes to connect with their supporters.
A ticket for the The Essex Lottery costs £1 per week and 50p will go directly to our shop!
